Don't be afraid of performing Shakespeare!

The purpose of this class will be to take some of the mystery and fear some actors feel in approaching the works of William Shakespeare.  The class will examine the two traditions that must be married to successfully perform Shakespeare, the modern ‘naturalistic’ tradition of acting, and the Elizabethan (and Classical) tradition of ‘heightened’ drama.  Most of the curriculum will utilize short texts designed to illustrate some methods of tackling Shakespeare’s texts.  Actors will learn to  recognize some of the hints that Shakespeare put into his writing to help them make choices in how they will play a scene. They will also acknowledge that there is no one correct way to perform any Shakespearean text.

The workshop will be taught in 3 sections; each section will meet twice (the same material will be covered in each section). Workshop participants can come to either section.

Section 1 – Approaching Shakespeare
This section is designed to wipe away some of the mystery from performing Shakespeare, and to familiarize the participants with Shakespearean text.  The main goal will be to have students develop a comfort level in dealing with Shakespearean text and language.

Section 1 will be offered: Thursday, March 28, and Monday, April 1.

Section 2 – Playing with the Language

This section is designed to continue  to have the participants become comfortable with Shakespearean text, and to understand how the modern ‘naturalistic’ approach to acting can be effective in performing Shakespeare.  Conversely, participants will also experience how use of Elizabethan acting traditions can be of use in performing in modern drama.  Brief sections of scenes will be used examined, and participants will be encouraged to choose a monologue/soliloquy from a Shakespearean play to be worked on in the next section.

Section 2 will be offered:  Thursday, April 18, and Monday, April 22.

Section 3 – Characters and Monologues

This section uses Shakespearean texts to discover what they reveal about a character.   Monologues and soliloquies will be used to further examine how Shakespeare revealed the character's thought process and intention.

Section 3 will be offered:  Thursday, May 9,  and Monday, May 13.
