3 Local Arts Organizations Work Together to Give Local Youth Performing Arts Opportunities
If the second theater on Broadway didn't open because it was afraid to compete with the first theater on Broadway, there would be no Broadway.
When arts organizations complain that there are too many competing for the same audience, just direct them to the model created by a successful partnership between Inland Valley Repertory Theatre, Claremont Community School of Music and the Grove Theatre in Upland. Through the collaborative Musical Theater Camp IVRT summer workshop program, students are taught skills in acting, singing and dancing, then invited to perform alongside seasoned adult actors in fully staged performances. This summer, students will have the opportunity to perform in the musical "Oliver!"
Students last year described the experience as “exciting”, “fun”, “cool” and “awesome”. One child said “It was really neat to see how everything works behind the scenes”. Not only that, the program became a fundraiser for the music school. The Grove donated a percentage of the ticket sales back to the school, to use for scholarships for students wanting to take music classes and lessons. A “win-win” for all involved, Musical Theater Camp IVRT was so successful that a second session was added.
